Choosing a Caterer
Asking the right questions will help you select the right caterer:
- Is the caterer licensed and insured?
- Does the caterer operate out of a licensed kitchen facility regularly
inspected by the Los Angeles County Health Department?
- How will the catering staff dress for your occasion?
- Will staff set up for event prior to start time?
- How will your event be staffed? How many employees will be on site? How long
will the staff stay at the event?
- What portions will the caterer plan to provide for each guest? For example, if
chicken is the main dish, how many ounces will each guest receive?
When two main entrees are mentioned, must guests choose one or are
they served both?
- Are plates and eating utensils included in the price? What kind? Paper and
plastic? Acrylic? China and glass and flatware? If wares are not included
in the price, how much more would it cost for the caterer to provide them.
- Are linens included in the price? If not, how much more for the caterer to
provide them?
- Will staff cut and serve any dessert you provide? What is the fee? Will staff
cork and serve cider and champagne you provide? What is the fee?
- Will the caterer coordinate timelines and work with the Dj, photographer, etc.?
- If a buffet, will it be self-serve or will staff assist the guests?
- Regarding the price: What is the price per person? Does this include sales tax?
Does this price reflect all service fees? Travel fees? Delivery fees?
Gratuities? If no, what are the additional charges? What are the charges
or fees for any additional services you have asked for?
Once you have chosen your caterer, make sure you get it in writing with a contract!
